**Getting Started With Library Research**

An overview of where to start your research journey

This LibGuide* can help you begin your research experience and learn about our resources and services. You can use the side bar to jump around to the section you want, or there are navigation buttons at the bottom of every page to read the guide in a linear way. 

We have reference librarians available if you have questions- you can contact us in person, by phone, chat, or email. The contact information is on the left side of every page in the guide. 

*LibGuide is pronounced with the "Lib" like Liberty!

Getting help

You'll be interacting mostly with two departments while using the library: circulation and reference. 

The reference department has librarians who can help you with your research, using the library, or any other questions on course work you might have. Our contact information is on this page (and every LibGuide), and you can stop by either library to ask questions in person. You can make research appointments anytime, or just pop in. We try to be available during our posted hours, but sometimes we are busy teaching workshops, or may be in the stacks helping another student. The easiest way to see if we are available is to look at the chat. When we are available it's green, and it times out when we are away from the desk!

Regular semester reference hours (these change over holidays/breaks)

GTU Main Library
Mon., Wed., & Fri. : 8:30am - 4pm
Tue. & Thur. : 8:30am - 6pm
Sat. : 1pm - 4pm

SFTS Library
Mon. - Fri. : 9am - 4:30pm


The circulation department is the desk next to the front door at the GTU library, and at our SFTS branch library. There is a member of the circulation staff available during all open hours.

The circulation staff of either location can help you:

  • check-out or return materials
  • renew books (in person, online, or over the phone)
  • place holds (to have the book delivered to either location from the other, or from storage)
  • recalls (when the book is checked out and we ask for it to be brought back for your use)
  • paying fines (although we hope you renew and not have any fines!)
  • checking out course reserves (bring the call number of the book to the desk)
  • study room reservations (at GTU main library only)

The circulation department will communicate with you via email to let you know when your books are due or when holds can be picked up- so if you don't use your school email, please update your email address!

Additional book drops

In addition to the book drops at the main library in Berkeley and the SFTS branch in San Anselmo, we also have two remote book drop locations where you can return items: on the ABSW campus and PLTS campus. 

Our book drops are a great option for after-hours returns or over breaks- but you can also renew your items online!

Remember: if you are checking out books from CAL or the public library, please return their books to them. We have separate computer systems and returning non-GTU books to us can result in late fines or lost fees!
